How to Apply as a Foreign Worker in Canada

Canada is a great country to live and work in. If you were born here or are a Canadian resident, it is as simple as applying for a job and getting hired. Working in Canada isn’t that easy for citizens of another country.

While it is a process, you can apply as a foreign worker in Canada. The Temporary Foreign Worker program was created for Canadian employers to bring in workers that are not citizens to fill in temporary labour shortages.

  • It is based on the needs of the labour market for specific occupations across all regions.
  • It ensures that Canadian citizens and permanent residents get the opportunity to apply for the job positions first.
  • It was originally only for live-in caregivers and agricultural workers but now covers many skilled and unskilled jobs.

Here are the steps you must take to apply as a foreign worker in Canada.

Qualifying as a Foreign Worker in Canada

To qualify for the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program, the applicant must have an offer of employment from a Canadian employer. Companies need to apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to obtain permission from the government to hire foreign workers. This is done through Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). The ESDC will then determine if the employer can hire foreign workers to fill the positions.

Applicants must be legally permitted into Canada. This means there is no medical, financial or criminal reason for inadmissibility. Since it can be a tricky application process, make sure you work closely with your employment lawyer to maximize the success.

Applying for a Foreign Worker in Canada

To get hired under this program, people must apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for a work permit. You can also apply at a Canadian visa office. This must happen before coming to Canada.

Outside of Canada

With the application, you must give biometrics. This is a photo and fingerprint. They will be reviewed together to make sure you qualify for the work permit and that the company that wants to hire you has complied with all the required conditions. You may also be asked to go in for an interview in your country and send any additional paperwork asked for. You may also be required to have a medical exam which can delay the process for several months.

If approved, you will get a Port Of Entry letter Of Introduction, which you show when you get to the border. They will give you your work permit on the day you arrive. You must be fully vaccinated to come into Canada.

If you are already in Canada

Your application will be processed in Canada with all the included documentation and biometrics. The same procedure will take place about your employer’s eligibility and your qualifications. A medical exam may be requested before the officer grants the work permit.

Visitors to Canada can also apply for a foreign worker job but must have a valid visitor status or reapply if it has expired. They also must have had a valid work permit for 12 months before applying for the new permit. Eligible people will then fill out the Application to Change Conditions, Extend My Stay or Remain in Canada as a Worker form. When approved, your work permit will be mailed to the address you gave on file.

All work permits will state the type of work you can do, where you can work, how long your stay is, and the employer’s name.

Arriving in Canada

When you are ready to travel into Canada for your job, make sure you are fully vaccinated and have all your travel documents and proof of work application with you. Also, bring any supporting documents, including proof of experience and education, as well as your offer of employment and a copy of your employer’s LMIA. This will make getting through customs easier.

Your identity will be checked using fingerprints and documentation, and you must tell the border services officer that you are here for work. The officer determines to their satisfaction that you meet the entry requirements and that you will leave at the end of your stay. They might check your medical exam results and request another one if they expired. Then they will give final approval for you to enter Canada and print out your work permit. Make sure your passport is valid to pass the date of your departure, or you will have to leave when it expires.

After going through the process and obtaining all the required documents, you have arrived safely to start your employment on Canadian soil. Remember that a work permit does not mean you can immigrate to Canada. This is strictly permission to travel into Canada to work for a specific company for a specific period.

Foreign citizens are here to fill skill and workforce shortages in Canada, and it is a great program to hire qualified people internationally.

The 4 Biggest Reasons to Hire a DUI Lawyer

All of us make mistakes. Some are much larger than others, like making the decision to drive while impaired. When that happens, hiring a DUI lawyer should be at the forefront of the mind as this is a serious situation.

If you aren’t sure whether or not you need a lawyer, you definitely do. There are more than a few reasons why you would want to hire a lawyer for a DUI offense. Here are some of the biggest reasons to do so:

1. You Could Lose Your License

Even if this is your first offense, and you think that you don’t need a lawyer, think again. While there may be instances in which a plea offer can be available, it is far from a given thing. It is important to remember that a plea deal can be the starting point, not necessarily the end point.

By working with an experienced lawyer, it can mean working down the charges. Doing so may mean being able to keep your license, which can be crucial for many life situations, but it starts with hiring the right attorney for the job.

2. Worth the Investment

The biggest reason why many don’t hire an attorney for DUIs is because they feel like it is too expensive. And sure, getting someone who is worth their salt won’t exactly be cheap. The investment in an experienced lawyer is more than worth it.

Having a DUI lawyer can make a difference in a lot of ways. In the aforementioned point, it was mentioned how they may be able to save you from a suspended license, but they can also help keep your job and live an independent life. Without the right lawyer, all of those things and more are going to be in question.

3. Expert Advice

For those who have never been charged with a DUI before, the entire process can be scary. There is a lot of uncertainty to it, and the prospect of losing your license, car, job, and more can be enough to make things blurry.

With the proper lawyer in your corner, it means having a knowledgeable expert on your side, following the proper procedures and taking all of the necessary steps to ensure that your case goes as successfully as it can. Don’t think that representing yourself is a good idea for even a minute.

4. Going to Trial

There is the chance that the case could go to trial. If it does, and you think that you are capable of representing yourself, think again. Doing so can leave you vulnerable, especially when facing an experienced prosecutor. The consequences could mean going to jail if things don’t go well.

Judges don’t have patience for amateurs who have no knowledge of the law. By bringing in an attorney, you can be better prepared should it proceed to trial. Don’t assume the judge will give you a break because you have no idea what you are doing in your defence.

6 Benefits of Partnering with a Recruitment Agency

Employers face challenges getting qualified candidates for their job openings. It helps to have a suitable job description to attract the ideal candidate and enough time to go through resumes and interview interested job candidates. Unfortunately, most employers don’t have the time to go through the entire recruitment process. That’s why it’s best to partner with a recruiting agency when hiring a general labourer to fill up the job position in your organization. Other benefits of partnering with a recruiting agency are listed below.

1. Cost Savings

Cost savings is one of the benefits of partnering with a staffing agency to fill up job positions in an organization. Companies save costs in training and onboarding, advertising job vacancies, designing payroll databases, and background testing and screening. The staffing agency develops payroll databases, reads through resumes, and conducts pre-employment testing and drug screening, saving the company’s time and money.

2. Guidance in Forming Your Hiring Strategy

If you are uncertain about your hiring strategy, a recruitment agency can be a valuable tool. For instance, the agency can help you decide the number of employees you require for your team to meet the company’s workforce growth objectives. Additionally, the agency advises on the kind of skills personality traits you need for the roles and if you need a direct or contract hire.

3. Expertise

Staffing agencies are skilled and experienced, exceeding the human resource departments of most organizations. They are also in contact with several candidates looking for work because they interact with employees of various industries. Therefore, they learn the trends in the job market, and they can use that expertise to get you a suitable general labourer that meets your hiring criteria.

4. Reduces Risks of New Hire Turnover

New hire turnover can be costly for any organization. The time and resources used to hire and train employees can be overwhelming. It becomes worse when the new hire doesn’t fit in the organization well, and you have to do it all over again for replacement. A reputable staffing agency helps you hire the best candidates for the job roles, increase retention rates, and reduce turnover costs.

5. Seasonal Placements

Staffing agencies offer solutions for seasonal job placements. They can benefit companies in search of temporary hires to replace employees on medical leave. If you need a seasonal employee to offer extra support during peak work seasons like summer vacation or tax seasons. The agency can easily connect your company with seasonal employees who perfectly fit the available slot.

6. Improve Productivity

Increased productivity is one of the most significant benefits of hiring a general labourer through a staffing agency. Most human resource departments are stretched to their limits screening resumes, scheduling interviews, handling payrolls, and phone screening. Every minute an HR spends on hiring activities would be used on other strategic functions. Therefore, partnering with a staffing agency reduces workload and improves productivity.
