7 Steps When Installing a New Roof

Choosing the perfect shingles for your roof is an important undertaking. Since this is not something you do every year, you will need to have it done right the first time. The ideal shingles for your home depend largely on your taste, preference and budget. To help you in choosing the perfect shingles, the following tips should be helpful.

1. Choose the Type of Shingles You Want

Only you can make this decision. It’s your house and only you can decide what type of shingles your roof should have. In choosing the type of shingles you want your roof to have, you will have to choose between laminate and 3-tab shingles, the two most common types for residential houses. 3-tab shingles, also known as asphalt shingles, are flat and lighter than laminate shingles. They are also less durable. Laminate (or architectural) shingles have a heavier base and feature more layers of refined asphalt.

2. Decide on Style and Features

You will have to make a decision on the desired dimension of your shingles. For that ultra-dimensional shadowy effect, architectural shingles are highly recommended. If your house is in an algae-prone neighbourhood, shingles with built-in protection against discolouration should be used. Whichever shingle type you choose, it should have a Class A fire protection rating. Your shingles should also be able to withstand the vagaries of the weather.

3. Settle on a Preferred Colour

Now that you have decided on the type and style of your shingles, you will need to settle on an ideal colour. Choose a colour scheme that blends with your home. Different homes will lend themselves to different colour schemes. In most cases, a neutral colour might be a good place to start, especially if you plan to sell your home soon. But you don’t have to play it safe. If you can, be as bold as your personality allows you. However, if your home is in a controlled neighbourhood, you may have to consult the neighbourhood association for the approved type of shingle colours.

4. Ask the Neighbours

Drive or walk around your neighbourhood and note all the different shingles featured on roofs. If you find one you particularly like, ask for more details about it from the homeowner. Knowing the type of shingles your neighbours have will also be helpful if you want yours to stand out.

5. Ask a Professional Roofer

A professional roofer has experience installing shingles. Look for one in your neighbourhood and ask for their advice. They should be in a position to know what type and colour is ideal for your roof. Whatever colour and type of shingles you decide to go for, the most important thing is to use those that match with your home, and which will withstand the vagaries of the weather for years to come.

6. Settle on a Budget

The type and quality of shingles you choose will be determined by how much you are willing to commit to roofing your home. You will need to measure the length and width of the roof surface area to establish how many square feet of shingles you will require. This information will be very helpful in establishing how much your roof will cost based on your desired type of shingles.

7. Warranty Duration

You will also need to decide on the number of years you want your roof to be on warranty. If a longer period is desired, you may have to purchase a more durable type of shingles, which will definitely cost you more. However, warranties are as credible as the companies that offer them. You will therefore need to be extra careful in choosing your shingles supplier. Ensure that they have a proven track record of honouring warranties.
